The shift towards environmentally friendly cleaning products occurs as one of the most equivocal topics that have generated immense debate across different societal contexts. This may be attributed to an array of proposing and opposing views developed about the topic. Of essence is the fact that climate change has become apparent across different settings; hence, modern-day society is conscious of the need to adopt actions to mitigate it. Cleaning products that are not environmentally friendly have been closely linked to the climate change being experienced all around the globe. The main reason for the shift towards environmentally friendly cleaning products is because it enhances human health.


Environmentally friendly cleaning products limit the release of harmful substances into the environment, which is often contained in non-environmentally friendly cleaning agents. These harmful substances are linked to various conditions such as skin irritation, chemical poisoning, respiratory, and eye infections (Kocsis, 2009). The connoted disease conditions have adverse effects on the well-being of the populations. In fact, certain types of cancer are caused by chemicals contained in cleaning products that are not eco-friendly. Deductively, the shift towards environmentally friendly cleaning agents confers human health benefits by mitigating specific disease occurrences.


There are other reasons that justify the shift towards environmentally friendly cleaning products. These include the fact that such cleaning products ensure the overall safety of people as well as the environment (Gordon, 2011). Nonetheless, the health benefits tenable from the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products is the main reason they are fast gaining traction. Sustained human health ensures overall human productivity, which guarantees the continued development and progress of the human race.

Green Cleaning Products: Why More People Are Adopting Them

Cleaning products are central to any living space, and people consider them part of their lifestyle. Thus, when moving to a more sustainable habit, washing products must take precedence. More people choose to use environmentally friendly cleaning brands due to their low cost, health benefits, and extended household product lifespan. 

A financial incentive is a very effective motivator to switch commodities. People move to green cleansing products since they free up money for other uses. Manufacturers charge cheaper for them as they require less material to produce. Similarly, when people choose to manufacture cleaning commodities at home, the cost drops below synthetic chemical-based products (Siddique & Hossain, 2018). The low price makes eco-friendly cleaning products appeal to cynics of sustainable living.

Additionally, the natural ingredients used in green cleansing brands eliminate any chance of bodily reactions. Counterfeit products present alongside established varieties can have adverse effects on the body. However, eco-friendly cleaning products are safer since their natural ingredients do not negatively affect the body (Siddique & Hossain, 2018). Further, using green cleaning purifies the living quarters and alleviates respiratory issues related to contaminated air. Once customers realize they can live a healthy life by changing their cleaning products, they go exclusively green. 

Household utensils and surfaces also last longer when washed with environmentally-sound cleaning products. Rational people would instantly change their washing brands if using another would ensure their car seat or sofa wears less. Starting with high maintenance surfaces, such as sofa sets, car seats, and wallpapers, the regular client turns to green cleaning products for their entire home (Siddique & Hossain, 2018). Thus, as news of this benefit spread across communities, more people adopt them.

As we merge into a more environmentally aware climate, consumers are now presented with the option of going green for their go-to household products versus the previously popular option of chemical-based products. What is the reason for the shift towards more environmentally friendly cleaning products? While some may argue that green cleaning products are less effective due to having less harsh chemicals and thus lead to more time spent cleaning, promoting the absence of such harsh chemicals is beneficial to our planet and helpful for safeguarding the health of users of said products. Not only is the reduction of using chemical-heavy cleaning products useful for cutting down on eye and skin irritations and allergic reactions, but the cost of using natural ingredients to create cleaning products is lower than purchasing regular products. The transition into using environmentally friendly cleaning products occurs in favor of less physically irritative reactions, less contribution to planet pollution, and less money spent on chemically harsh products. By using all-natural cleaning products, users lessen the amount of chemicals passing from the lungs to the bloodstream, resulting in less problems caused to the nervous and respiratory systems. One study demonstrates the hazards of normal cleaning products, identifying cleaners as a high-risk group for adverse health effects of the skin and respiratory tract (Gerster, Fabian, M., Vernez, David, Wild, Pascal, P., & Wild, Nancy, B., 2014, p. 47).

After performing a systematic review of normal cleaning products, results of this study showed that more than 132 chemical substances were found in 105 different cleaning products, potentially giving rise to simultaneous exposure to different chemical substances and putting users at higher health risks (Gerster et al., 2014, p. 60). The level of increased risk in cleaners for respiratory issues ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 times the background risk (Rosenman, 2006, p. 221).

Why Consumers are Now Turning to Environment-Friendly Products

In the past couple of years, more and more consumers have been more conscious of their purchases and the products they buy. Twenty or thirty years companies didn’t have the advanced technologies that are available today. Yet, are there companies that are not creating environment-friendly products and still are doing well today? And for the companies who have jumped on the trend of producing environment-friendly products, what impacts are they making on the market and their consumers? The focus of this essay is to examine the factors as to why consumers continue to purchase non-environment friendly products versus the growing trend of consumers buying environment-friendly products. Has the role of social media impacted buyer decisions? Are there benefits and reasons to both sides of consumers’ decisions?

Benefits and Reasons for non-environment Friendly Products

What factors influence consumer decisions to pull out their credit cards and purchase someone? Consumers today are savvier than in the past. While in the past consumers didn’t have the luxury of instant shares and constant updates on social media mediums 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Consumers nowadays research products before they make a purchase online or at the local store. According to Laja (2019), a blog contributor to CTX in the marketing industry, explains the top factors that influence buyers from research studies. A good point about whether a company supports or doesn’t support creating environment-friendly products is an established consumer base.

If there is a product that has an established place in the market, and whether it is “environment friendly” or not, in most cases, consumers will continue to purchase the product. Why? Because it is a good product and people like it. According to CTX.com, Simplicity and previous positive buying experience are two considerations that consumers think about when making any type of purchase. In many cases, companies that have been around awhile know their markets and who to market to. They have established customer trust with long term customers by creating and establishing positive buying experiences and keeping their marketing messages simple.

The Shift in Cleaning Products

Over the last several years, there has been a deliberate shift in making “green” cleaning products. Many household cleaners contain chemicals that are harmful to the earth and to the people using them. Large corporations are under a lot of pressure to deliver products that are effective, but also environmentally friendly. The biggest reasons for this shift to “green cleaners” are the media’s influence and consumer demands.

The Media

The media has a huge effect on how the public thinks and acts. Specific subjects can be blown up or minimalized to suit certain narratives. Since the early 2000s, there has been a decided push to get greener products on the shelves (Watson). Issues like global warming and the state of the planet are always at the forefront of an activist’s mind. Therefore, with the appearance of this particular narrative, it did not take long to get people on board (especially with the recent influx of youth activism). Several articles and news stories were written about how harmful household chemicals are to the consumer and the planet itself. Media outlets called companies to make cleaner, greener products; corporations were getting exposed to the chemicals they were using in their cleaners. It was enough to scare consumers into a media frenzy. Different blogs and social media sources exploded with opinions and outrages over the harm these products were doing. As with any activist call, there was a sense of “we need to do better.” (Science Daily).

Typically, all consumers want products that are all-natural and safer to use; the media just acted as a spotlight, shining on the problems and hazards with cleaning products. The shift to greener products was directly affected by the media and the demands of the consumers. However, without the media, the demands never would have been as loud or prevalent.

The Consumer Transition to Eco-Friendly Products Cleaning Services

Since the turn of the century, there has been an increase in environmentally friendly cleaning products. Companies like Good Life Solutions, Dr. Bonner’s Pure Castille Soap, and Mrs. Meyer’s have seen high levels of success when it comes to selling these products. This is because people are becoming more aware of the harmful effects of chemicals in traditional cleaning products. Consumers want to buy safer products for their families and companies need risk-free products for their employees. Not only that but people are developing a greater environmental conscience. More and more consumers feel responsible to make environmentally friendly product choices to curb climate change. For these main reasons, there has been a shift towards eco-friendly products in the past two decades.

First and foremost, the switch from traditional to eco-friendly products is due to perceived health benefits. It has been found that traditional products emit chemicals that can exacerbate or even cause asthma, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, 2017). For consumers with children, the issue of asthma is of great concern, and switching cleaning products provides a solution for child safety. Once promised the benefits of “no sneezing, red eyes, headaches, or sore throats,” consumers were more likely to accept and prefer green products (EPA, 2017). Moreover, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, “soaps, detergents and cleaning compounds not classified elsewhere were cited as responsible for 10, 252 work-related emergency room visits” (EPA, 2017). Companies need to reduce liability so many have made the change to products with less harmful chemicals. Aside from health and safety, there are also a growing number of consumers who want to help the environment.

In Favor of Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Products

The concept of environmentally friendly or “green” cleaning involves the use of cleaning products that contain benign chemicals in contrast to the potentially harmful components of conventional cleaning products (Espinoza, Geiger, & Everson, 2009). A 1993 executive order from President Clinton introduced the concept of green cleaning, and the practice gained significant momentum in the early 2000s (Espinoza, Geiger, & Everson, 2009). The definition of what exactly makes a product environmentally friendly is murky, but most, generally speaking, the label applies to products that have a positive and reduced negative impact on their indoor and/or outdoor environments. More simply put, environmentally friendly cleaning products reduce harm to human health and to the environment while still being effective for their intended use. Critics of green cleaning initiatives are skeptical of product performance and cost-effectiveness. However, the shift towards environmentally friendly cleaning products is a continuing trend with a multitude of benefits. The reason environmentally friendly cleaning products and procedures are successful is that they reduce the use of water and chemicals, reduce harmful waste and require less transportation energy, and foster a safer indoor environment, and pose fewer health risks to the people that use them.

Cost-effectiveness, as it relates to cleaning products, is a complex subject. Not only is the base cost of the chemical important to consider, but there are other tangible and intangible factors that ultimately affect cost. Tangible factors that affect cost include the face price of the cleaning chemical, the price of other materials used during cleaning, labor costs (where applicable), water use, and electricity use (Espinoza, Geiger, & Everson, 2009). Intangible factors to consider include health risks, odors, and environmental impact (Quan, Joseph & Jelen, 2011).

How Health Risk Lead to Advancing Use of Environmentally Friendly Cleaners

In today’s society, environmentally friendly products abound. While the concept of being friendly to the planet is not new, there is certainly a type of wave in today’s world to be mindful of the Earth. The most common switch to come to mind is that of cleaning products. There are many reasons for the shift towards environmentally friendly cleaning products. However, the most predominant would be the amount of health risk(to both humanity and the planet) associated with traditional cleaning products.

Research has shown that more traditional cleaning products carry an increased risk of respiratory illnesses, eye and skin irritations(EPA, 2019). Extended use of traditional cleaning products has even been seen to increase the risk of endocrine system irritation(Martinez-Pena, et al., 2013). While the research of traditional cleaning products’ risks is primarily geared towards the health damage done by the chemicals inside of cleaning products, there is obviously also damage done to the environment. A study done in Merida, Mexico found that there was a risk of contamination to drinking water sources and septic systems due to traditional cleaning products being used in places such as bathrooms of homes(Martinez-Pena, et al., 2013). This presents a health risk to an entire population. In America, several states have enacted new regulations for chemicals that are legal to use in cleaning products to prevent things like this from occurring(Zota, et al., 2017).

It goes without saying that cleaning is a necessary part of living a healthy lifestyle. A home that is clean is less likely to have illness-causing germs and bacteria inside of it than a home that has not been cleaned. On this same token, if it is possible to aide in the planet living a healthy lifestyle, per say, it is each beings’ responsibility to do so.

There are a multitude of ways to take of the planet we call home. You can trade your traffic-filled commute for a more eco-friendly and heart-healthy bike ride. Swapping out your old aerosol sprays and detergents for “green” or natural alternatives can help keep your family protected from exposure to harsh chemicals. More sustainable products like olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar, etc. are naturally occurring, which means they are safer to use on every-day surfaces. While safety is always the first and foremost concern when choosing products, it doesn’t hurt to save a couple of bucks as well. Sara Snow, the author of ” Sara Snow’s Fresh Living,” recommends switching to greener products because they are more affordable and equally as effective at cleaning. Snow says, “[natural substances] can do the trick for pennies on the dollar, compared to buying conventional cleaning products” (Sara Snow, 2009). The house is a home not only to humans but also to pathogens that dwell unseen in floors, on walls, in ceilings, and even in the very air that we breathe. In fact, as far back as 2004, Sundell had pointed out that indoor air plays a major role in the start and spread of human deaths and disorders. Indeed, since most air intake happens at home, “most illnesses related to environmental exposures stem from indoor air exposure” (p.51). Due to this alarming pervasiveness, home cleaning practices continue to be a significant focus in academia, science, folkways, manufacturing, trade, and industry.

House-cleaning, that never-ending routine caused by the intersect of human lifestyles and enclosed habitations, has morphed from a mere household chore into movements on child health (Largo, Borgialli, Wisinski, Wahl, and Priem, 2011) and safety (Nickmilder, Carbonnelle and Bernard, 2007; Roberts and Dickey, 1995; Roberts, Wallace, Camann, Dickey, Gilbert, Lewis, and Takaro, 2009), comfort (Potter, 2011; Bushman and Bushman, 1988), the health of women (Le Moual, Varraso, Siroux, Dumas, Nadif, Pin, and Kauffmann, 2012; Matulonga, Rava, Siroux, Bernard, Dumas, Pin, and Le Moual, 2016), of the elderly (Tsai, Chi, Lee, and Chou, 2007; Warmer, 2000) as well as of those who clean houses (Earnest, 2013).

At the same time, green home-cleaning concepts permeated disparate areas such as ecology (Ouimette, 2011), environmental health (Holt, 2012), and even the entire planet (Butlin, 1989; Grosvenor, 2003; Kocsis, 2010; Logan, 1997). As a result, many home-cleaning trades and industries are now keeping up with “eco-friendly cleaning products” and “sustainable manufacturing practices” (The Good Trade, 2020). Indeed, even as more home-cleaning products are waving from the green bandwagon, (Nautiyal, 2013; Mascarenhas-Swan, 2009), the debate rages. While home-cleaning businesses and product manufacturers claim ISO certification (Sinha and Verma, 2013) and the use of environmentally safe systems and processes (Cornelisse?Vermaat, van Ophem, Antonides, and van den Brink, 2013; Larson, Lin, Gomez-Pichardo and Della-Latta, 2004), many others continue to argue about lip-service buzzwords, band-aid solutions (Le Moual, et al, 2012; Tsai, et al 2007; Matulonga, et al, 2016), and complete fabrications (Cornelisse?Vermaat, et al, 2013; Larson, et al 2004; Siracusa, De Blay, Folletti, Moscato, Olivieri, Quirce, and Zock, 2013).

These discussions also include products such as floor cleaners (Sinha, 2013); pesticides (McCauley, Michaels, Rothlein, Muniz, Lasarev, and Ebbert, 2003); and air fresheners (Nazaroff and Weschler, 2004). At the same time, there is increased concern about agents such as dust mites (Sheikh, Hurwitz, and Shehata 2007); head lice (Perlman, 2004); bedbugs (Potter, 2011); household mold (Reynolds et al, 2012); house dust (Roberts et al, 2009); and lead (Lioy et al, 1998; Feingold 2004), to mention a few.

Also discussed are specific house cleaning practices such as “using water, plastic bags, and disposable tableware” (Zhao, Gao, Wu, Wang, and Zhu, 2014). According to Zhao et al, the use of water here refers to the second use of the same water for “washing vegetables, house cleaning, and gardening” (Ibid).

This analysis of each side of the debate moves to present the most environmentally-friendly home-cleaning strategies (Leopold, 1965; Reynolds, Boone, Bright, and Gerba, 2012; Feingold and Anderson, 2004; Lioy, Yiin, Adgate, Weisel, and Rhoads, 1998) in the following paragraphs. The consumer Populus will continue to shift towards environmentally-friendly cleaning products as the financial barrier for them lowers. Previous complaints about green cleaning products were mainly about the high price tags for solutions deemed ineffective, but the continuous advancements in technology, decreasing production costs, and increasing market size have made a bright future for environmentally-friendly cleaning products. The trend for using environmentally-friendly products continues to grow across the world.

As mentioned, the view over two decades ago was, “Environmental costs are skyrocketing at most companies, with little chance of economic payback insight” (Clarke et al., 1994). The financial initiative for companies to start using environmental products, or becoming environmentally-sustainable themselves, was not beneficial. Consumers and businesses also found products deemed environmentally friendly were not effective at their job (Clarke et al., 1994). Cleaning solutions today use higher quality compounds that are still environmentally friendly, and also more effective (Sani, 2017)

It is evident when individuals, even on a community-level, recycle items they have decluttered from their homes, which can positively impact the environment.

Household Hazards: Analyzing the Replacement of Home Cleaning Products with Environmentally Safe Alternatives Cleaning Services

In the modern age of environmental consciousness, a particular focus has formed concerning efforts to mitigate pollution at a micro-scale. Whereas prior efforts have pursued broader ends through such regulatory legislation as the Toxic Substances Control Act (1976), newer endeavors have sought to slow global pollution at a personal level. Owing to this, consumers have begun a steady, albeit notable, shift towards home products that are more environmentally friendly than their more hazardous alternatives. The root of this shift towards individualized pollution control, though, has remained somewhat enigmatic. Particularly when viewed through the understanding that industrial factors contribute the lion’s share of domestic and global pollution, a shift towards individualized regulation seems counterintuitive (EPA, 2018). The response to this enigma, though, may not be as positive as the trend suggests. Specifically, in this analysis, I will demonstrate that the shift towards environmentally conscious cleaning products is not a positive measure of personal responsibility for pollution, but rather, the outcome of a carefully orchestrated marketing campaign undertaken to reduce pollutants and increase profits, with the lowest level of industry-wide loss.

In the text of The National Environmental Policy Act, Congress speaks to this matter bluntly, stating “The Congress recognizes that each person should enjoy a healthful environment and that each person has a responsibility to contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the environment.” (42 USC § 4331). In its time, language such as this represented an unparalleled approach to the threat of global pollution. By placing the onus of responsibility not simply on industrial or private factors, but all citizens, Congress indicated the clear intent that reducing global pollution would require global support. Further, this language sought to create a culture of responsibility for the environment, with every human being as warden of its continued wellbeing.

The Value of Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Products

The first decades of the 20th century have generated a new competitive context for companies. An open-border market expands the diversity of products offered. Under these conditions, a consumer has learned to weigh up decisions by integrating various aspects of the products. Among the most relevant variables of the new consumer decisions is corporate reputation. In particular, cleaning product companies face the challenge of promoting environmentally friendly products not only for competitive reasons but also because this ethical behavior defines their social image.

A 2013 study by Havas Media Labs highlighted the social value of brands. At that time, of the 10 Meaningful Brands, only one of the large cleaning product companies was ranked number 9. “The customers are beginning to take a quantum leap into a human age where a life meaningfully well lived is what really counts,” pointed out Umair Haque, the director of that research (Clendaniel, 2013, para. 9).

Today consumers are more aware of the effects of chemicals on the environment and obtain more information. Recently, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a guide for government agencies to purchase green cleaning products (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2018). The goal, in addition to caring for the nearly 2.8 million janitors exposed to chemical risks, is to lead an example of different consumption with low impact on the environment.

Consumption under suspicion is intensified in certain situations. In February 2019, in the Republic of Korea, humidifier disinfectants have resulted in 6246 reported victims and 1375 deaths by causing pulmonary fibrosis. Research by a group of academics showed a growing level of concern among the population about who and what is behind the products consumed at home (Sim, Lee, Uhm, Y. et al. 2019).

Are green cleaning products better than conventional ones?

Consumer demand for environmentally friendly cleaning also referred to as green cleaning is on the rise. Green cleaning entails the use of cleaning products and methods that preserve human health and cause less harm to the environment. Green all-purpose cleaners, laundry detergents, scouring powders and dish soaps are common in shopping malls across the United States. The growth in consumer demand for green cleaning products is due to the benefits they accrue to the environment and human health. However, some consumers undermine their benefits terming them as costlier than traditional commercial products.

Benefits of using green cleaning products

Consumers are demanding more green cleaning products because of increased environmental awareness. A consumer review carried out by Pickett-Baker & Ozaki (2008) showed that consumers were purchasing more green products and were becoming more environmentally aware. Green cleaners are manufactured using energy-efficient methods and the ingredients used are toxic-free. They are readily biodegradable making disposal of waste easy. The use of these products will lessen water and air pollution. This will help to fight climate change. The use of green cleaning products also causes less harm to human health. They are made from natural and organic ingredients that have little effect on the body from exposure.

The disadvantage of green cleaning products

One major drawback slowing down the adoption of green cleaning products is the cost. Green cleaning products are more expensive than their traditional equivalents. This is mainly due to the costs incurred in research and development that are passed on to the consumer (Aydin, I?ik & Ulu, 2016). There is also the added cost of certification by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other relevant bodies.


The use of green cleaning products has increased rapidly over the last decade. This is mainly attributed to them being environmentally friendly both in terms of their production and disposal. They also cause less harm to human health. Their environmental and health benefits will convince consumers to continue buying them despite their high cost.

Integrating the concept of social responsibility into business activities can have an impact on the financial performance of companies. (p.2)

In essence, to implement a successful business model that includes Eco-Friendly products, businesses must heavily research how their business model impacts public opinion.

The past thirty years or so has seen a significant shift towards more environmentally friendly cleaning products. However, what is reinforcing this shift that’s made it so dramatically successful? While there are a few explanations that help individuals understand the shift towards greener cleaning products, including a growing fear of global warming, the most important motivational factor is increased knowledge. Nowadays, individuals are far more informed about how the chemicals in their cleaners can harm them, their families, and the environment. With the evidence about the hazards associated with some of these chemicals so widely available, many people have switched to healthier, more environmentally-friendly cleaning products.

People can thank the rise of social media and the Internet for providing them with so much access to reliable information regarding the chemicals in their cleaners. Since social media connected the world, people have experienced many social media campaigns as well as news stories that brought evidence of certain cleaning chemicals harming the individuals that used them. For example, the recent Round-Up lawsuits are one of the most important reasons why people are double-checking the substances in their original household products. After learning how Round-Up caused cancer, the vast majority of individuals ditched the product immediately, and several lawsuits followed (Bellon, 2020).

To prove how effectively eco-friendly cleaners are selling, consider the statistics. For instance, in 2007, the total amount of sales for eco-cleaners was $303 million. By 2011, it rose to $640 million, which means a double sales increase in a short four-year span (Greg, 2015). Nowadays, you can find environmentally-friendly cleaning products on all of the shelves at your local grocery store, next to the regular cleaners. Ten years ago, people had to purchase their green cleaning products online. So, it seems the dramatic shift is here to stay.

In the current world, human beings have a significant impact on the global environment. For the past few years, there has been a negative impact that causes noticeable environmental changes (Kocsis, 2010). The changes have brought negative effects to the environment that includes air pollution, animals’ extinction, and global warming. This has called for many businesses in the cleaning industry to ‘go green’. Notably, the shift towards eco-friendly cleaning products has helped to lower pollution that ultimately leads to health restoration.

Pollution has greatly contributed to the environmental and human health decline. This has emanated from the way harsh chemicals in cleaning products are handled.
